Eric L. Gansworth, Professor of English and Lowery Writer-in-Residence, Canisius College New Poets of Native Nations (Graywolf Press, July 2018) gathers the work of 21 poets of diverse ages, styles, languages, and tribal affiliations to present the extraordinary range of new Native poetry. The publication features long narratives, political outcries, experimental works, and traditional lyrics—and the result is an essential anthology of some of the best poets writing today. Heid Erdrich, editor of the anthology, will discuss the poets’ literary approaches and their relevance to contemporary American poetry. Tacey Atsitty and Eric Gansworth, poets featured in the anthology, will read their work as part of this program.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS Heid E. Erdrich, a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibway, grew up in Wahpeton, North Dakota. She earned degrees from Dartmouth College and The Johns Hopkins University Writing Seminars. A recipient of Minnesota State Arts Board fellowships, awards from The Loft Literary Center, the Archibald Bush Foundation and elsewhere, Heid Erdrich has four times been nominated for the Minnesota Book Award which she won in 2009 for her book National Monuments from Michigan State University Press. More » Sharon Suzuki-Martinez lives in Tempe; earned her Ph.D. in English from the University of Arizona; and grew up in Hawaii. An evening with author, Heid E. Erdrich Heid E. Erdrich , Fishing for Myth: Poems by Heid E. Erdrich (MVP).Heid E. Erdrich has authored three poetry collections: National Monuments, The Mother's Tongue, and Fishing for Myth. She has also co-edited Sister Nations: Native American Women on Community and is the recipient of many awards including fellowships from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Bush Foundation. A member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibway, Heid grew up in Wahpeton, North Dakota. She earned degrees from Dartmouth College and The John Hopkins University Writing Seminars. She and her sister Louise Erdrich recently co-founded a non-profit clearinghouse for indigenous language-centered literature called Birchbark House.
