Yevgeny Yevtushenko was born Yevgeny Aleksandrovich Gangnus on July 18, 1933, in Zima Junction, a remote lumber station on the trans-Siberian Railway in the Irkutsk region of Siberia. He became a poet whose work inspired a generation of young Russians in their fight against Stalinism during the mostra'n més Cold War. His poems included Zima Junction, My Beloved Will Come, Stalin's Heirs, Babi Yar, and Russian Tanks in Prague. He also wrote two novels including Don't Die Before You're Dead. A comprehensive collection of Yevtushenko's works that spans his whole life. Worthy for savoring at length or merely dipping into to enjoy the beauty of this fine poet. The translations are by various authors who are more than able to express the poet's work in poetic english.
I haven't read Yevtushenko since I was a school kid, but refreshed my memory the other day courtesy of the internet. I rather liked this:
Waiting
My love will come
will fling open her arms and fold me in them,
will understand my fears, observe my changes.
In from the pouring dark, from the pitch night
without stopping to bang the taxi door
she’ll run upstairs through the decaying porch
burning with love and love’s happiness,
she’ll run dripping upstairs, she won’t knock,
will take my head in her hands,
and when she drops her overcoat on a chair,
it will slide to the floor in a blue heap.
