Discordant

It felt too modern for a true fantasy. There were inconsistencies in what some characters knew or believed that pushed me out of the story. Motivations were repeated for certain goals to the point of annoyance.

Proofreading was lacking. Several instances of scrambled word order or doubled words. Spelling and punctuation seemed clear.

It's not terrible. Just not good.

Mac is a police officer who has become a shapeshifter in a bizarre incident which included her waking up in the morgue - this was perhaps the most interesting part of the book but happened before the story started, we only get to hear about it in passing strangely as it would have made a superb beginning. Anyway, it turns out that there are two types of shapeshifter who hate each other and both types are trying to find out what sort Mac is, they are not very good at this and despite all the people who are watching her she seems always to be on her own when anything happens. The crux of the story is - is she a cat, which is good, or a dog, which is bad ? (a sort of species racism here).

It turns out that Mac's boss is also a shapeshifter and so is her partner and in order to hide what they are they erase evidence and manipulate police cases - fortunately no one else in the department seems to have a clue what they are up to. There is also an overarching council which deals with inter-species issues which also becomes involved in Mac's life.

All of this is unsatisfactory. Mac never really gets to address the shock of changing species because everyone important around her is a shapeshifter. The inter-species rivalry seems to have no reason. The bad dog is deluded and obviously mad but appears to hold down an important job. It was all a bit wearing.

This has been done much better elsewhere, I don't recommend this one.
