Wonderful story of the bravery of Navy and Air Force pilots and helicopter Search and Rescue crews. Fields was shot down on his first mission over Laos. A-1 pilot Ed Leonard was shot down during the first rescue attempt. Leonard was later taken prisoner. The pace of the story is magnificent but is marred by constant repetitions as if the story were published as a serial. I'm sure the author was trying to make the chapter transitions smooth but I found it confusing to expect the story to continue when there was yet another summation. This military action takes place later in the war as the US senior staff became increasingly less willing to fully commit to US personnel caught in vulnerable situations. The book is a listing of very brave men who tried their best to do their job professionally in the face of overwhelming odds against survival. Ed Leonard became my favorite person in the whole drama. Fields also describes the supernatural way in his rescue took place, as divine intervention for him at least, seeing the Jolly Green rescue ship encapsulated by a protective sphere of light.… (més)
