A nice little book, full of interesting snippets of Queensland life in colonial times, not just crimes but the mores and attitudes of the times, including horrendous racism. The author gets kudos for not being overly-moralistic and for including crimes other than brutal murders. Entertaining and thought-provoking.

I was lucky enough a few years ago to participate in archaeological research on St Helens. The finds were fascinating enough if hardly earth-shattering. Bottles, medicine phials, cutlery, broken crockery (some quite fancy and presumably expensive), fragments of tools and farm implements.. I must admit I didnt know all that much about St Helena when I was there, but having read this excellent book since, the picture we found with the relics makes much more sense. It was a prison, a particularly hellish prison by all accounts, but it was also a place where people made lives for themselves, the prison staff and their families as well as the prisoners. This book captures all that in an easy reading format with copious illustrations and coverage of all aspects of the prison's history. Highly recommended.… (més)
