Genesis Dawson, an only child, carries the weight of a 4-generation family legacy as she manages the Dawson ranch in Montana, her parents having passed away years earlier. Her life was once intertwined with her husband Collin, a partnership abruptly severed by a tragic accident. Now, with her son Jud off at college, she navigates the challenges of raising young Willa alone. Genesis finds solace in the text messages exchanged with Will DeSantis, a ranch management consultant in Texas, and her late husband's best friend from their Army days.

Will tells a lie of omission, a decision made on the spur of the moment. The lie and Will's actions beyond that momentary choice made this a complicated novel for me to read. A lie of omission and subsequent actions (although a different scenario) triggered memories in my history that were tough to live through and changed my outlook on trusting men. After delving into 3 books in this series, if I were to describe the author's writing, I'd use romance tropes such as slow-burn, second chance, and happily ever after. In projecting my history onto Genesis and Will’s relationship, I couldn't fathom how their relationship could evolve into a slow-burn, second chance, and happily ever after. I thought of the relationship as a screeching halt, with no chance, and happily evading misery. Yet, I was compelled to continue reading. I needed to discover Genesis's choice.

I kept reading and was reminded of something profound when a reader isn’t sure if a story is for them. I discovered this novel is for me. This novel is one of the many reasons I read. When individuals read books, it is easy to project their backgrounds, experiences, and feelings onto their characters regardless of genre. We can learn something valuable when the storyline takes us beyond what we know and feel. We can open our minds and hearts to new perspectives, albeit different from our own. I couldn't imagine the reaction that Will would receive to his lie of omission and subsequent actions. I was surprised when I knew not the knee-jerk reaction but the thoughtful reaction. I was surprised because it made so much sense to me. With its unexpected twists and turns, this novel challenged my preconceived notions. It was a perspective I had never thought of and opened a new thought window. It was a perspective unique because it was a different scenario and a history unique to Genesis and Will. I loved it!

Emily and Jacob are both characters with some heavy baggage. They meet and it doesn’t take much time for them to fall into what they think is love, both really not knowing what it really is. A traumatic storyline affects both characters and they must work through it to be happy.
I really liked the character of Riley, who is wise beyond his years and the cat and dog make for some levity.

If you like deeply emotional romance novels then this is the book for you! Both Emily and Jacob have dark moments from their pasts that play into the growth of their current relationship. I especially admired Emily's strength as she navigates her life with Riley. Overall this is a great read that I highly recommend.

Special Note: I've received this book in exchange for a review.

Let me start by saying how much I just love Riley. What a kid! The cat strikes me as hilarious and the dog is very sweet. Emily and Jacob both have painful pasts. It's not easy for either of them to work through it. Both have issues that they would rather bury with the past, but all issues need to be addressed. Therapy is a useful tool for thousands and I'm glad that the author chose to emphasize it throughout the book.

Another favorite character: the librarian! She's a hoot!! She reminds me of Blanche Devereaux from "Golden Girls", but she's even more forward than that. I don't think she has a filter in her brain at all, which only adds to the humor.

This book ended the way I thought it would (much to everyone's happiness). If you're looking for a squeaky clean book, I don't think this book is for you. I have no doubt that Erin Fitzgerald will continue to please her audience with more books from this community..
