Join local author Philip Freeman as he signs copies of his new books The World of Saint Patrick and Saint Brigid’s Bones on Saturday, October 18 at 2:00 - 3:30 pm at Dragonfly Books.
Local Decorah author Philip Freeman is known for his vivid stories, retellings, and insights on the ancient and medieval world. As a boy, he cared more about comic books than Homer or Virgil, spending his year in Italy where his father was stationed earning Boy Scout merit badges and bowling. In his first year of college at the University of Texas, Philip thought Latin might be fun (and not too hard), lasting a week before dropping the class. Following a second try at Latin and adding Greek, mythology, and archaeology, he was hooked.
Philip Freeman earned his Ph. D. at Harvard University and currently holds the Orlando W. Qualley Chair of Classical Languages at Luther College. A few years ago, Philip decided he wanted to share stories about the ancient world with an audience beyond his students. He is the author of over a dozen books on the ancient and medieval world including How To Win An Election: An Ancient Guide for Modern Politicians (Princeton University Press 2012) and Oh my gods: A Modern Retelling of Greek and Roman Myths (Simon & Schuster 2013).
In his latest books, Philip once again breathes new life into ancient history. Collecting together the most important sources on early Irish Christianity, The World of Saint Patrick (Oxford University Press 2014), offers the definitive account of Saint Patrick’s life along with a vibrant picture of early Christianity in Ireland. Philip includes letters written by Patrick himself, the life story of Brigid, the earliest woman saint of Ireland, and the tale of the voyage of Brendan across the unknown sea in search of a land promised to the saints. A story of violence, brutality, and faith, Philip captivates readers with the fascinating true tales of Patrick’s life and this remarkable period of history.
In the novel, Saint Brigid’s Bones: A Celtic Adventure (Pegasus Books 2014), Philip blends the accurate portrayal of everyday medieval life with absorbing adventure. Set in a time when druids roamed the land, lively young sister Deirdre embarks on a mission to find the stolen bones of her convent’s patron saint, Brigid. Trained as a bard and raised by a druid grandmother, Deirdre must draw on all her skills while being torn between two worlds. Philip’s compelling plot and insights to the early Catholic Church will intrigue readers to the last page.
