Love on the Line 2 is the second installment in the series Women at Work. It is about Andy (Andrea) and Rooster, who fell in love in the first book. They both work on a pipeline, which is dirty, dusty, hard work. No one expected that Andy can pull her weight, but when an unfortunate accident sidelines her grandfather Buck, she has to take on responsibility as lead engineer. Rooster and Andy's love life becomes strained as he tries to balance being the foreman and being her boyfriend/lover, and not letting that spill into their work life. There is also a feeling among some that women aren't cut out to do the work required on the pipeline.
I wish I had read book 1 before reading book 2 to provide me some background on the characters, but even though I didn't, I could still feel Andy's angst at proving herself capable in a field dominated by men.

I've read a handful of Fullmer's books over the last few years (Hometown and Sugar Mountain series), and just like the rest of them, I'm not disappointed. Every book just seems better than the last. In this book, we see characters that feel like they reflect the times. They are so incredibly realistic and relatable that I could swear these were made after people I know.
This book continues the love of Andy and Rooster as they grind on one of the more difficult manual labor jobs out there: working the pipeline. As a woman working in a field dominated by men, Andy's struggle provides good insight into the tough time many women have in male-dominated fields. With Andy thrust into a leadership role, the dynamics of her relationship are challenged along with the stress of the job and other personal issues. Fullmer captures the work/life struggle in this book and isn't afraid to show her character's bravery and fear.

Great book; I suggest you grab book one first and get started on the series!

Author Kirsten Fullmer has worked in the field of engineering, has been a teacher at the college level, was a freelance consultant, and has an affinity for art. Now retired, she has published twelve novels including her six part HOMETOWN series, the four part SUGAR MOUNTAIN series, now, LOVE ON THE LINE series, of which this is Book 2.

One kindred spirit in Kirsten’s romance novels is the presence of strong female characters and how they cope with love, life and relationships. Returning to the life of Andrea, her principle character in this series, she opens as follows: ‘Andrea glanced at Rooster as he drove. Sunrise was still more than an hour away and tension lay heavy between them. She could tell by the set of his jaw that he was deep in thought. The truck slowed to a top and the blinker clicked in silence. As they waited for a truck to pass, Andy leaned forward, eager for a glimpse of the yard. Rooster pulled off the narrow country road and eased his work truck through the gates to bump across the dried, rutted mud toward the office trailer…”Are you ready for this?” Andy asked, watching Rooster from the corner of her eye.’ Kirsten’s prose gift is early apparent!

The author’s summary outlines the plot: ‘‘Andy and Rooster find their romance in peril when job-related stress, injuries, and extraordinary weather conditions interfere with their relationship, both at work and at home. Andrea has come to understand working outdoors in inhospitable climates and is thriving in her role as assistant bending engineer. She and Rooster have moved in together and are starting a new job. Although exhausted, Andy is glad to be working with Grandpa Buck again, even though it limits her time with Rooster. She’s missed the other hands too, and she is very curious about the new coating foreman; an intelligent, confident, and independent young woman. So is her friend, Nick. Andy also finds herself befriending a neighbor at the RV park, the wife of a welder on the line. Seeing a girl her age as a mother has Andy wondering about her own future. Could she manage to pipeline and be wife and mother too? As always, pipeline construction is interrupted by delays, fraught with fatigue, and contingent on the weather. Caught up in a world of egos, Andrea and Rooster struggle to maintain their workload while finding time for each other after hours. When a serious on-the-job accident tips the scale of leadership, Andy and Rooster are thrown into conflicting positions. If stress at work, little time for love, and their reputations in danger wasn’t enough, Andy’s parents show up to complicate things further. Rooster is determined to prove himself capable of his new position, and Andrea isn’t about to let Buck down; will their fledgling romance pay the price? The couple has their horns locked in battle and they can’t let go, but they need each other, especially now. Both will have to make sacrifices and take a chance on ruining their credibility in order to stay together.’

Enjoying this novel is enhanced if Book 1 is read first. Fast paced and full of thoughtful insights into family and romance. Recommended.

Kirsten is a writer with a love of art and design. She worked in the engineering field, taught college, and consulted free lance. Due to health problems, she retired in 2012 to travel with her husband. They live and work full time in a 40' travel trailer with their little dog Bingo.

As a writer, Kirsten's creates strong female characters who face challenging, painful, and sometimes comical situations. She believes that the best way to deal with struggle, is through friendship and women helping women. She knows good stories are based on interesting and relatable characters.

For me the dialogue and characters are what made Love on the Line 2 a most enjoyable read. The fact that I forgot I was reading a book and was so absorbed in it all, shows me how much I enjoyed it. Sometimes the elements that make up a good book can all seem to be there but somehow it still doesn’t click, but this was a book that, for me, excelled in all areas.
You can tell through the cadence of the writing that the author has a formidable spirit expressed through her stories. Highly recommended, a very interesting, well written and emotional story with a strong female protagonist!
