Most of the book follows the accepted history of the Donner party (with the exception of the homosexual activity between some of the teamsters), & so makes for interesting reading.
It does provide a bit harshly with Mr. Reed, however.
Considering Keseberg's behavior I would have found the ending more believable if the author had Keseberg seek Tamsen out rather than her go to his cabin. As she was aware of the conditions in which he had lived, I am sure she would have gone to one of the other shelters than stay with someone she already suspected of having murdered others in order to sustain himself.
And the book definitely would have been better if it had not started off with a chapter of the Donners having sex.
