Adam Gopnik té 8 esdeveniments ja passats. (show) At the Strangers' Gate: Arrivals in New York with Adam Gopnik Ottawa International Writers Festival 2017 Join us for a taste of a vivid memoir that captures the energy, ambition and romance of New York in the 1980s from the beloved New Yorker writer and author of the international bestsellers Paris to the Moon and Through the Children's Gate. When Adam Gopnik and his soon-to-be-wife, Martha Parker, left the comforts of home in Montreal for New York, the city then, much like today, was a pilgrimage site for the young and the arty and ambitious. But it was also becoming a city of greed, where both life's consolations and its necessities were increasingly going to the highest bidder.
At the Strangers' Gate builds a portrait of this moment in New York through the story of their journey... (rakerman)… (més)

Does Foodie Culture Do Anyone Any Good? Adam Gopnik presenta The Table Comes First: Family, France, and the Meaning of Food.; Jonathan GoldFree; reservations required. The United States, once a nation of lackluster cooking, has over the past three decades become a nation of people obsessed with food. Specialty markets bring organic food to millions of customers who used to put up with less appetizing produce and meats. Farmers markets are a nationwide phenomenon. At the sushi restaurants Masa in New York City and Urasawa in Beverly Hills, customers spend over $500 a head to sample the freshest fish flown in from halfway around the world. We create identities based on diets—vegans, locavores, and pescatarians multiply—and politics seem to enter into even mundane grocery aisle decisions. But not everyone can afford to eat organic and sustainably. And some people don't believe that we are what we eat. Good food tends to be enjoyable for those who eat it, but is it good for anything else? Adam Gopnik, author of The Table Comes First: Family, France, and the Meaning of Food and the LA Weekly's Jonathan Gold visit Zócalo to discuss the joys and pitfalls of the new place of food in our lives. Adam Gopnik will also be appearing at the Getty on Thursday, February 23, for a lecture about winter scenes. Find more information at the Getty's site. Lotted and garage parking is available twenty-four hours at 233 S. Main St. Limited street parking is also available after 6pm. (kiracle)… (més)

Freeing the Elephants: Babar Between the Exotic and the Domestic Imagination of France Adam GopnikIn a wide-ranging lecture that explores what makes successful children's stories "work," New Yorker essayist Adam Gopnik—author of Paris to the Moon, Through the Children's Gate, and The King in the Window, a book for children—examines the Babar series in its cultural and artistic context. He proposes that the series is, in essence, a self-conscious comedy about the French colonial imagination and its close relation to the French domestic imagination.
