Peter Gossage was born in Remuera, New Zealand on October 22, 1946. He began his career at an advertising agency. His work producing Maori motifs for a television commercial was noticed by a publisher, who suggested he write a book. He became an author and illustrator of many well-known Maori mostra'n més legends. His first book, How Maui Found His Mother, was published in 1975. He wrote more than 20 books during his lifetime including Fish of Maui, How Maui Found the Secret of Fire, and Battle of the Mountains. n 2013, Peter was awarded the Storylines Gaelyn Gordon Award for a Much-Loved Book for How Maui Slowed the Sun. I like this one because it weaves the traditional culture in so nonchalantly. "So Matau took up his mere and smote the giant, and then they all went back to their pa" and of course we don't need telling that the mere is a club and the pa is not their dad but the compound where they live, but so often we do get it. Also there is a nice just-so story here about how Lake Wakatipu got its shape (they burned the giant while he was lying down in the fetal position and it left a crater).
