My War at Sea 1914-1916: A Captain's Life with the Royal Navy during the First World War, by Heathcoat S.Grant is an interesting look at the life of a battleship captain during the great war. His command, HMS Canopus led a rather short life, having commissioned in 1899, the ship was sold for scrap in 1920; a sign of how quickly battleship technology was advancing at that time.

The book reads more like the captain’s log, taking us through both the adventurous and sometimes more mundane life aboard a World War I battleship, rather than a typical historical novel. Military historians especially will enjoy the details given as Canopus takes part in action from Coronel and the Battle of the Falklands before joining the political mayhem that resulted during the battle for the Dardanelles.

At the time of this writing, the book is currently available at no charge in eBook form on Amazon and I would highly recommend anyone with an interest in naval history to scoop it up quickly.
