Claudia Gray is really distinguishing herself as the heavy-hitter of the new canon. This is a relationship I have wanted to know more about since The Phantom Menace, and this novel did not dissapoint. As always, Gray does an outstanding job of blancing action with relationship drama. Now I'm dying for her to write about Dooku and Qui-Gon!

Not only has Claudia Gray become my favorite Star Wars author, she's now one of my favorite authors period. She ties the interior lives of her characters to their external relationships with such poignancy and precision that it blows my mind. I've never seen internal monologue, memory, and the like be so wonderfully used. I wish we could've gotten a another scene or two of Han & Leia's marriage, but otherwise I loved this book from pillar to post.

Wow. I think this book just became my favorite Star Wars title. Gray adds such incredible depth to events from the movies. The destruction of Alderaan & the first Death Star in particular go from spectacular to heartbreaking thanks to this novel. Those are mere moments, however, in a tapestry of beautifully written characters. She handles a long span of years masterfully, never losing a strong sense of pace. These are characters you want to root for collectively, even though they have so many philosophical differences. The resolution of those differences creates a delicious tension and conflict.… (més)

Claudia Gray writes about the tension between needs and desires in a way so precise, I can honestly say I've never seen the like. While it felt a little long in places, and the ending wasn't as dramatic as I would have liked (see below), this was still a good read in an interesting new universe.

I thought there was a great opportunity for a different, more powerful ending. When Noemi steals the ship, I so wanted her to destroy the gate then and there, rather than head back to Genesis. Emotionally, that's where I thought we were going, and then the remainder of the book felt a touch deflated when we didn't get there. Her sacrifice would have brought the relationship with Abel full circle for me and shown him humanity at its best.
