Visions of the American West provides a chronological view of the West as seen through the eyes of artists from the middle of the nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth century. It is as much about the discovery of the West as it is about the artists, the journey via their work providing a vivid image of the landscape and the people living there or journeying through. The text is fairly minimal, and after the introductory chapter amounts to a paragraph or two about each artist and a few lines about each work, mostly of a factual nature and rarely a comment on the artwork itself. While paintings predominate there are also a few engravings, lithographs and photographs.

Of the numerous artists included particularly well represented are Alfred Bierstadt and Thomas Moran, there are also several paintings by Fredric Remington and Charles Marion Russell, Frederic Edwin Church, Ernest Blumenschein, George Catlin, Thomas Cole, John Mix Stanley and Thomas Worthington Whittredge. Also represented are Edwin Sheriff Curtis, Maynard Dixon, Georgia O'Keeffe, Walter Uffer, The Taos Society of Artists, and Ansel Adams. There must be in excess of 250 images, all in full colour with the exception of a few black and white photographs, engravings and lithographs. Most of the images are full page size and there are a few double page spreads, only occasionally is there more than one image one a page, there are also a few informative large scale details of some of the paintings.

This is a BIG heavy book: 17" x 12" (43cm x 30cm), 256 pages. Lavishly illustrated, it is a book to be enjoyed primarily for its pictures, the text providing just a brief history of the West rather than any art critique. There are a least a couple of wrongly captioned pictures. An impressive book for a strong coffee table.

A well done book. It is a pictorial collection of plates by Edward S. Curtis; I must admit not having been acquainted with his work prior to seeing this book on the shelf. The editor of this volume neatly breaks up the country into broad geographic regions, within each several nations of Native Americans are documented via photos by Mr. Curtis.
