Sidney Harcave (1916–2008)

2330 First Blood: The Russian Revolution of 1905, by Sidney Harcave (read 30 Sep 1990) This is an excellent and well-balanced account of the 1905 Russian Revolution. I never realized how little I knew of that revolt until I read this 1964 book. Father Gapon's march was the mere beginning--and the shooting occurred at various sites in Petersburg, not just at the Winter Palace. The revolution got worse and reached its climax in October--the Czar then granted a Duma, and undertook repression resulting in death to thousands. It is too bad the 1905 revolution did not succeed: the whole course of history since then would have been tremendously different. This book is the kind of history I should read (though it is very sparing in footnotes)-- a full treatment of a single event in history. A most worth reading book.… (més)
