London based author Teddy Hayes eared his degree in mass communications from Cleveland State University and is a playwright, scriptwriter, film director, theatrical producer, and writer. His novels include the eight volume DEVIL BARNETT DETECTIVE SERIES, URBAN OUTCRIES, HOW TO WRITE A CHILDREN’S BOOK, MAJI MUKU FOREST TALES series, HER NAME WAS AMY TILLMAN, and now he shares his background and advice with THE GUERRILLA GUIDE TO BEING A THEATRICAL PRODUCER. He often writes, directs, produces, and composes music for his theatrical performances.

Explaining the title, Teddy states ‘The producer is in charge of all the elements of productions, “from soup to nuts” as the saying goes.’ In this book he addresses all issues of production: Pre-Production (script/rights, reading your play, budget, business investment structure, raising the money, legal contracts, insurance, hiring the director and main creatives, accounting, securing a company manager, rehearsal space, actors and equipment fees, contingencies), Production aka the execution stage (set design and building, casting, music, microphones, crew, rehearsals, housing actors, costumes, transportation, storage, sound cues, etc), Performance, and Post Production (what possibilities arise from that production such as festivals, upselling).

Each of these is addressed thoroughly – a very fine survey of all that is involved in a production – and in a manner that is easy to assimilate. This is a terrific guide for those entering the field of entertainment production, but it is also a fascinating encyclopedia of all the aspect that are involved in the final product we all enjoy when visiting the theater. Teddy’s experience and wisdom is generously shared in this accessible book Recommended.

You will find multiple layers of suspense within the pages of Ghost Park. This novel is Teddy Hayes's ninth book in the Devil Barnett Detective series. Mr. Barnett is asked to oversee the operations of an amusement park before the final will of Luca is read. Staying at Ghost Park allows him to encounter the "Overnight Ghostly Experience" that people all over the world come to partake. He finds the owner may have found something that got him killed.

I found it ironic that Detective Devil Barnett, a one-time assassin for the CIA, is now walking among the dead in Ghost Park. Teddy Hayes is an exceptional author that brings characters alive, with quirks and unusual personalities. The mystery surrounding Luca's death becomes more intriguing as the detective gets to know the family and the layout of the amusement park. The author keeps the drama levels up, gluing you to the next thrilling twist until Devil Barnett wraps up the mystery.… (més)

‘I had been a professional killer for the CIA for over ten years of my life’

British author Teddy Hayes is a prolific writer, both of novels and film scripts, and a film director. His output includes two novels based on his feature films – HER NAME WAS AMY TILLMAN and DABLOCK, an instructive volume – THE GUERILLA GUIDE TO BEING A THEATRICAL PRODUCER, URBAN OUTCRIES – an African American Theater Trilogy, and his acclaimed Harlem-based DEVIL BARNETT DETECTIVE SERIES, of which GHOST PARK is the ninth volume.

The primary character of this series is Devil Barnett, a detective based in Harlem, and Hayes’ use of street language and raw depictions of responses makes him unforgettable. He populates his novel with characters who become visual, a colorful cast that spans a vast spectrum of types.

Hayes captures attention with the opening lines of this volume: “Yeah, just like that dumbass idea you had about the hound from hell, and within two days we had the animal rights people threatening to blow the damn place up because the dog died from phosphorus poisoning that you used to make it glow in the dark.” “But Dad, that was only because the manufacturer sold me the wrong kind of phosphorus. He sold me white phosphorus and the dog licked it off his legs, but...” “But what, Jaco? The damn dog had a fit and ran off barking like he’d lost his mind…Had to shoot it on the spot. Died in front of a hundred or more people and made the front page in half the newspapers in New York, not to mention the negative publicity that was generated online,” Luca said.’ That degree of lively conversations makes this novel jump to life!

The tightly woven plot is condensed by the author – ‘Devil Barnett is called upon by a close family friend in Harlem New York to investigate the death of a relative. As a result he travels to Long Island New York to visit Ghost Park, which is a famous theme park where people can come and stay overnight to have an "Overnight Ghostly Experience." After Devil arrives he begins to see some things that cause suspicion. Firstly the family is a weird and complicated mix of personalities, and secondly the reputation of the dead man is littered with enemies who might have good reason to want him dead. Aside from that, Devil is faced with some unsavory business types who seem to have had shared secrets with the dead man, secrets that may have links to a very ugly past. The hardest part for Devil is to play it cool and find out all he has to without tipping his hand and showing his adversaries that when crossed that he is a very dangerous man.’

The immediate response for first time readers of this series is to rush to read the other volumes. The story is cinematic in presentation – and hopefully Teddy Hayes will consider transforming Devil Barnett stories into film! Recommended.
