This book was a free a few days ago and I was drawn to the cover art. Even though they say, "never judge a book by its cover" I am so glad I did.

The book had my heart pounding so fast because I needed to know what was happening next. I read it in two days because I could not put it down. I am praying for a second book. I NEED a second book. This book follows two characters. Robert McKenzie is a mean ER doctor during the day and at night he is your modern day Batman with a twist. He kills the scum of the earth to avenge those that have been beaten and raped. Sharon is an optimistic social worker who moves to New York from Indiana. Things change when she finds out Robert's secret and soon the two fall in love.

I agree with Robert's view on life to a certain degree. I saw no problem in him beating and maiming rapists, child molesters, wife beaters, and skin heads. The ending though. The ending had me so confused. As I was lurking the internet I came across the second book and the third. The third will be available 10/2016 so until then I will wait so I can buy both books and read back to back!

Crack (or cracked?) New York City ER physician doubles as a nighttime vigilante, wreaking havoc on wife beaters, child molesters, rapists, and, most of all, neo-Nazis who engage in some or all of the above. Meantime, during the day, he occasionally breaks away from his analysis of crime trends on his iPad to save the day by performing impossible feats of surgery right in the ER for patients whose life won't last long enough to get to the operating room. Of course, he looks down on everyone else and uses wicked put downs to get them to leave him alone so he can concentrate on his crime analysis. Things only begin to change when he meets an idealistic social worker (from Indiana--she couldn't be from NYC, I guess) who perseveres despite his ill treatment of her.

Obviously, this is a problematic book. In between the sections where Dr. Vigilante does really unspeakable things to his victims, the author sprinkles crime statistics about the sort of things Dr. Vigilante is so pissed about. And as a doctor himself, the author knows what he's talking about. The emergency room scenes, when Dr. Vigilante saves the day, are riveting, which is to be expected, but how did the author learn so much about the weapons and seemingly far-fetched technology Dr. Vigilante uses to track his prey? Did the author also intern with a Guatemalan guerrilla leader who is reminiscent of some sort of Kung Fu master? Can at the author also tell if someone is irredeemable from looking in their eyes? Maybe we don't want to know. Maybe we just hope the author is safe at home writing more sequels. Maybe we don't stay out so late the next time we're in New York City.

Bottom line: This is a riveting, unsettling book and it is very well written. You will want to read more, but it make make you feel guilty for doing so. I have a feeling I'm going to give in....

Dr. Robert McKenzie is a NYC ER doctor during the day, and a vigilante at night. He is not liked by those who work with him as he is arrogant and just plain mean. But he goes after those who rape, molest children and beat their wives. In comes Sharon, the newest Social worker, who not only questions his Work ethics but soon discovers his secret. Sharon also has an effect on Robert, so that he begins to questions himself which could get him killed.

The intensity of the emergency room and the descriptiveness of the pain inflicted and the individuals brought goose bumps to this reader. You know that the author has a medical background; hopefully he doesn’t have a vigilante background. I found the story to be fast paced with nary a dull moment. Not much mystery to the story, but I still wanted to know how it would resolve itself as it could go in various directions. I found the relationship between Sharon and Robert decent as it showed the tender side of such an overconfident person. Overall, I enjoyed reading this one.… (més)
