- Hallgrímur Helgason was born in Reykjavík, Iceland, in 1959. He started out as an artist and debuted as a novelist in 1990, gaining international attention with his third novel, 101 Reykjavík, which was translated into fourteen languages and made into a film. He has thrice been nominated for the Nordic Council Literature Prize, including for his novel Woman at 1,000 Degrees. Also a columnist and a father of three, he now divides his time between Reykjavík and Hrísey Island. His website is HallgrimurHelgason.com.

I'm well on my way to being a cranky old gal in a garage, so I loved the premise of this book - All I need is a hand grenade and a computer...I'm a new lover of Icelandic fiction, so this book called to me for that reason as well. Icelandic writers seem to have an excellent sense of atmosphere, and this book places you in the garage, too. And all over crumbling Europe.
What I wasn't expecting was a heartbreaking story of a young girl surviving alone through WW2, struggling for food and safety, being sent or hiking all over Europe. The book switches between the current time and the past and the woman's confusion sometimes muddles things, but I found compelling this tale of an 'ordinary person' (how I hate that phrase) whose life was destroyed. Spent a day immersed in reading it.
In the reading, I learned about Iceland's declaring of independence, the awkward choices before that as a Dutch protectorate (pro-German) occupied by the British. Civil wars are always the most hellish, and this book sheds light on the fallout.
The writing is clear, funny, revealing, and, in the end, saddening. We will keep fighting wars, silly humans that we are. I hope that no one will ever again have to hand a live grenade to a child as their only sort of protection.

Es läuft gut in dem kleinen Ort Segulfjörður, denn die Heringsfänge sind seit einige Jahren gut. Menschen aus anderen Ländern bringen Fortschritt und verändern das Leben in der kleinen Gemeinde. So eröffnen sich auch für den Waisen Gestur unverhoffte Möglichkeiten, die er auch bereitwillig annehmen will. Es ist eine Zeit des Umbruchs, die aber natürlich auch neue Probleme mit sich bringt.
Ich lese gerne Bücher, die in nordischen Ländern spielen. Daher hat mich auch dieser Roman angezogen. Dieses Buch ist nach „60 Kilo Sonnenschein“ der zweite Band um den jungen Gestur, der inzwischen volljährig ist. Ich hatte den Vorgängerband nicht gelesen, was auch nicht unbedingt notwendig ist für das Verständnis. Aber mir ist Gestur so ans Herz gewachsen, dass ich das gerne noch ändern will.
Der Autor Hallgrímur Helgason schreibt wortgewandt und humorvoll, manchmal sogar poetisch. Allerdings schildert er manches auch in einer sehr direkten, bissigen und markigen Sprache. Man muss Zeit und Muße haben, um dieses seitenstarke Werk zu lesen, das leider einige Längen aufweist. Auch die fremden Namen machen es einem nicht immer leicht. Wir erfahren beim Lesen aber sehr viel über die Geschichte und Kultur Islands.
Mit den Neuankömmlingen aus dem Ausland verändert sich der kleine Ort Segulfjörður, der zwar fiktiv ist, aber genauso ausgesehen haben könnte. Der Fortschritt bringt viele technische Errungenschaften in diesen zuvor etwas rückständigen Ort, was das Leben rundum wandeln. Die Menschen wollen an diesem Fortschritt teilhaben. Doch solche Veränderungen bringen nicht nur Positives mit sich, leider gibt es auch Schattenseiten.
Auch Gestur trifft Entscheidungen, von denen sein Ziehvater nichts weiß, denn er hat Träume, die er wahr werden lassen möchte. Wir erleben mit, wie er erwachsen wird und die Liebe erlebt.
Doch es kommt, wie es kommen muss: Dass Schicksal schlägt zu in Segulfjörður.
Die Personen sind lebendig und oft etwas eigenwillig dargestellt.
Eine interessante Geschichte, humorvoll und tiefgründig zugleich, die mich gut unterhalten hat.… (més)

80-year old Herra lives in Iceland in a garage by herself with her laptop, and she is waiting to die. She was told 18 years earlier that she had 3 months to live due to cancer… and here she still is. She does expect it will finally happen soon. She is thinking back on her life with a focus on when she was about 10-15 years old or so during WWII. When her father joined the German army to fight for Hitler, she and the rest of her family left for Denmark. The book goes back and forth in time.
There were a few amusing parts, I thought, including Herra calling the local crematorium to make an appointment for her own cremation! Initially I found her current day situation more interesting, but as things progressed during the war, I liked those parts better. She wasn’t a very likable woman, though that wasn’t necessarily the case when she was younger. Although she also wasn’t treated very well by her three sons nor their wives. Overall, I couldn’t decide if I wanted to rate it 3 stars (ok) or 3.5 (good), so going with the in-between.… (més)
