- Born in Salt Lake City, Charlie N. Holmberg was raised a Trekkie alongside three sisters who also have boy names. She is a proud BYU alumna, plays the ukulele, owns too many pairs of glasses, and finally adopted a dog. Her fantasy Paper Magician series, which includes The Paper Magician, The Glass Magician, and The Master Magician, has been optioned by the Walt Disney Company. Her stand-alone novel, Followed by Frost, was nominated for a 2016 RITA Award for Best Young Adult Romance, and her novel The Fifth Doll won the 2018 Whitney for Speculative Fiction. Holmberg’s writing was great making sure to keep you interested, I like that despite the seriousness of the situation that Ceony finds herself in, Holmberg kept her wit and kept Ceony in character and made her react to problems in a believable way.
I also like how detailed Holmberg is, in The Paper Magician, giving you enough so you can imagine yourself (if you wanted to) in the book but at the same time not shoving every little thing down your throat. One thing I found that peeved me a little was the climax at the end, it felt a tiny bit rushed. I was hoping for a bit more use of the magic, especially Ceony. The Excisioner was described as overpowered and scary however with the ease she was dispatched was a bit disappointing.
I do recommend this book as I enjoyed it immensely, as a matter of fact, I am already reading the second book The Glass Magician.… (més)
