Homer’s Iliad Retold On Point, dilluns, gener 2, 2012 a les 0am Stephen Mitchell debat Ilíada. In the great tale of ancient Greece, young Paris swiped the beautiful Helen and took her off to Troy. And on came war and heroes. Gods and chariots. Achilles. Hector. Agamemnon. The Trojan horse. It’s an epic that goes to the essential nature of life – its beauty and its tragedy. The greatest teller of the heart of the tale is Homer in The Iliad. A new translation takes us back to the speed and clarity and grace of Homer’s telling, and makes it new. (Shortride)… (més)

Anthony D’Aries and Meg Kearney, The Language of Men and The Girl in the Mirror Anthony D’Aries and Meg Kearney, The Language of Men and The Girl in the MirrorHold the phone, kick down the door, and yell from the rooftops of all those American blue-collar towns that give birth to so many of our artists: a new one is among us, and his name is Anthony D’Aries. This man writes like Charlie Parker played the alto sax, with grit and verve and a willing free-fall into hard-won, illuminated truths. The Language of Men is a profoundly important book by a major new talent!” Andre Dubus III, author of Townie: A Memoir
“Meg Kearney is a deft magician...It’s amazing what she does with the presences and absences--people who aren’t quite there anymore remain potently everywhere--as Lizzie’s life unfolds. This book is a generous gift.” Naomi Shihab Nye, author of Transfer
Anthony D’Aries received the 2010 PEN/New England Discovery Award in Nonfiction. He is a graduate of the Stonecoast MFA program and currently teaches literacy and creative writing in correctional facilities in Massachusetts.
Meg Kearney is the author of The Secret of Me--the acclaimed novel that introduced Lizzie McLane--and two collections of poetry for adults, most recently, the award-winning Home By Now. She is Director of the Solstice MFA in Creative Writing Program at Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, MA. (ablachly)… (més)

Homer ; Ancient Greek: is the semi-legendary author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, two epic poems that are the central works of ancient Greek literature. The Iliad is set during the Trojan War, the ten-year siege of the city of Troy by a coalition of Greek kingdoms. It focuses on a quarrel between King Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles lasting a few weeks during the last year of the war. The Odyssey focuses on the ten-year journey home of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, after the fall of Troy. Many accounts of Homer's life circulated in classical antiquity, the most widespread being that he was a blind bard from Ionia, a region of central coastal Anatolia in present-day Turkey. Modern scholars consider these accounts legendary.
The Homeric Question – concerning by whom, when, where and under what circumstances the Iliad and Odyssey were composed – continues to be debated. Broadly speaking, modern scholarly opinion falls into two groups. One holds that most of the Iliad and (according to some) the Odyssey are the works of a single poet of genius. The other considers the Homeric poems to be the result of a process of working and reworking by many contributors, and that "Homer" is best seen as a label for an entire tradition. It is generally accepted that the poems were composed at some point around the late eighth or early seventh century BC.
The poems are in Homeric Greek, also known as Epic Greek, a literary language which shows a mixture of features of the Ionic and Aeolic dialects from different centuries; the predominant influence is Eastern Ionic. Most researchers believe that the poems were originally transmitted orally. From antiquity until the present day, the influence of Homeric epic on Western civilization has been great, inspiring many of its most famous works of literature, music, art and film. The Homeric epics were the greatest influence on ancient Greek culture and education; to Plato, Homer was simply the one who "has taught Greece". | |
