Max Hooper (1934–2017)

An introduction to different ecosystems (woods, meadow, lake/stream, and pond) in each of the 4 seasons. Written for Britain, there are enough similarities to be enjoyable in America (once you figure out some of the alternate names e.g. "lime" for basswood).
The Richard Adams' text includes quotes from poems, and a conversational approach which encourages exploration of nature. There is also a more scientific explanations and spot illustrations for many species and ecological concepts, e.g. plant life changes with altitude & latitude, animal shelters, pollination, animal dispersion, animal camoflage and temperature control.
My favorite part is the 2-page spreads of artwork with clears colors outlined in black. While it is not detailed enough for plant ID, there is a numbered key to each illustration identifying the birds, insects, animals and plants.… (més)
