This seems like it would be good as part of the curriculum for an Intro to Movies class. It takes a broad overview of some basic concepts in filmmaking, with some nice examples and probing questions in each section. That being said, I don't know if the text would make as much sense without seeing a lot of the movies she's referencing, which I have, so all of it seemed pretty straightforward but only because I'm mostly familiar with what she's talking about. So I would probably not recommend it for those who already have some level of knowledge about moviemaking, as this won't provide much more than you know. It is well-written, though, so the cases argued were pleasant enough to read if not particular exciting or novel.… (més)

If you want to watch movies and have a better (or really - for me- any) idea of why you didn't like it you should read this book. Hornaday writes in a very familiar manner and never goes beyond what the regular movie-goer could understand. This book improved my pleasure in good movies but has also made me more likely to just turn the movie off - because I know the reason the movie is bad.
