Biografia breu
Most of JJ Flowers' published books are historical romance novels (Avon Books, Zebra Books,) many of whichactually won awards and one of these awards was almost considered prestigious. She finally stopped being able to write these novels when she began having fantasies of killing off her heroines—in really dreadful ways. Her screenplays have been optioned at Warner Bros., Julian Krainin Productions, Bright Light Pictures among others; She suspects she holds the record for most amount of options! Two of her screenplays have received excellent coverage: The Good Fight, Clarence Darrow’s most compelling case where he successfully defended an African American physician who was falsely accused of murder and a two part miniseries Harriet Tubman: Let My People Go. As the world confronts the refugee and immigration crisis, Juan Pablo showed up to share his story, one that she thinks can offer hope for everyone.

Loved it. The hero was really a womanizer (and that's not the word I normally use) in the beginning, but somehow, it did not irritate me as much as it usually would. Loved that the heroine was strong and trained in martial arts. I would definitely read more of her books. (Passion's Joy is the prequel to this one apparently, but you don't really have to read it first.)

I loved this book especially all the parts while they were on the island. Great descriptions made the story very vivid. Christina and Justin fall in love while his is a prisoner on the ship she is a passenger on that is bound for Australia. She is incredibly shy with everyone but Justin. After pirates arrive and a monsoon hits they end up on a deserted island where Christina blooms. The island is like a paradise but between people and nature itself it is far from perilous. A really great read.

I’m reviewing this as a book I purchased back in 1987 and have re-read a number of times; I still have my original copy. If I had been writing reviews back then I would have given this 5 stars. But as someone reading this story in today’s social climate, the very innocent and naïve persona of our heroine—of all of this author’s heroines—could be a little difficult to take if they hadn’t read the book before. The setting in the American South and later in England, prior to the Civil War, does appear to be true to the characters’ actions and attitudes that existed at that time. Today, well things have changed a lot and their attitudes wouldn’t be tolerated.

Joy is a very young and poor teen with a passion for believing the best in people and doing the right thing. She works as part of the Underground Railroad and it’s not until Lord Ramsey Barrington saves and threatens her does she get an inkling of what could happen. He’s large, strong, incredibly smart, rich, a ship’s captain and his authority carries a lot of weight. He also can’t let himself get close to Joy as there is no way he can risk having a child and passing on his father’s madness. The story follows their adventures and struggles.

Okay, I’d brought up her innocence. It’s not just her age, but a part of her personality and I do love that about her. Sean, Ram’s best friend who is also a ship’s captain, adds a great deal to the story. The world and character building are well done.

The author’s main characters often have a poetic yet philosophical bent to their thinking and that’s true in this story as well. Also expect action, humor and a lot of emotions.

Definitely worth a re-read.
