Interesting concept, nearly well done. Let down by formatting issues (Maybe ARC ebook specific - giant chapter heading font sometimes continues into the text), a slight lack of editing (especially the opening pages that wants to make the impact, has poor and repeated phrasing), and a draggy middle without a clear resolution to the ending, generally the pacing is ok, but it's too long without enough new drama.

Jer is a young man who's always wondered what his career will be - his tribe have a very strictly assigned roles, but as an orphan he's never known what his family trait will turn out to be. He knows the village is on hard times though, meals are always thin and insufficient - the providence the Goddess provided to rescue the tribe generations back has been hunted away and the pathfinders have slowly faded away too. The tribe's name a came from those pathfinders who could walk the mists, finding shortcuts to untouched lands with bountiful game and supplies. But now there are just a couple of routes left and all hunted out. Jer's just out looking for whatever he can find as all the children do, when he finds an unknown valley off the normal woodland paths. He never quite connects the surrounding mist with the Mist of tales.

The characters all just about work supporting Jer's voice, although quarrels are forgiven very readily without lingering grievance, which seems a little odd at times. The world-building is well done, but the story itself lacks drive and drama, you never get the feeling the villagers are actually starving, even though that seems to be the implication. I did actaully quite enjoy it, but not enough to care about eh sequel.

This book has beautiful illustrations. My 3-year-old nephew enjoyed looking at the pictures and hearing me sing the words. He also loved the rhyming words. The message of the story was clear, although older kids would receive the messaging better than younger kids.

"Fall of the Cities: A Mercedes for Soldier Boy" by Vance Huxley is an action-packed and thought-provoking novel set in a post-apocalyptic world.
The book follows the story of two young people, Soldier Boy and Mercedes, as they navigate a world ravaged by war and disaster. As they travel together, they encounter a range of challenges and dangers, and must rely on each other to survive.
One of the book's standout features is the author's vivid and detailed world-building. The post-apocalyptic setting is richly imagined, and the reader gets a sense of the complex political, social, and environmental factors that led to the downfall of civilization.
The characters in the book are also well-developed and engaging. Soldier Boy and Mercedes are both likable and relatable protagonists, and their interactions are compelling and realistic.
Another notable feature of the book is the author's skillful use of action and suspense. The plot moves quickly, with a series of exciting and dangerous encounters that keep the reader engaged from start to finish.
Overall, "Fall of the Cities: A Mercedes for Soldier Boy" is an excellent post-apocalyptic novel that will appeal to fans of the genre. The author's skillful world-building, engaging characters, and exciting plot make for a fast-paced and enthralling read. I have never read any of the previous books in this series, and I think that it is important that you have done so. The author has tried to give the background to each character but really I think that detracts from the current storyline and readers should be encouraged to read the series from book 1. The writing and imagination seems to be very good, and the characters well defined.
