NCLA Review -Najila tells the story of a 12th century Persian princess who inherits her father’s estate in Constantinople. The main character, Najila, is spirited, self-reliant, and modern—at times unrealistically so. Nevertheless, from the start of the story, she is a likeable and engaging heroine. As she governs her newly acquired household, Najila relies on the help of several devoted servants, and eventually marries the son of her nemesis. Illinik has created a fast-paced story set against a vivid and well-researched historical background. She succeeds at making a remote setting vivid and believable. Readers looking for something different will appreciate the change of scenery and will look for more historical fiction from this author. Rating: 3 —AG… (més)
