The island was green and lovely, and the people seemed friendly. But Nancy's chums new certain secrets that they weren't about to share with her--at least until the right time. That, and the fact that crocodiles lay around looking like logs, and rogue elephants tended to lose their tempers, made Nancy a little uncomfortable at times.

An entire orphanage for the babies to love provided interest, and so did Sunnyside school, and a lot of other things. Actually, Nancy was amazed at how much fun and happiness in pain and tears in learning one can have on a small, green, lovely island.

"I wanted to show that being a missionary child has its own kind of excitement," responded Nancy Irland when questioned as to why she wrote no more alphabet soup.
