I thought this would be a four star but I think it settled just below that for me. I enjoyed the general plot, the little bit of mystery, and the basics of the family drama but it started to get a bit heavy handed with the church people towards the end. I understand that was part of the larger commentary on race but it didn't really seem to be the best way to do that. I wanted more focus on Leia and her sister and on getting to know Sel more than that.

Still good though, I'd recommend.

I expected this book to be somewhat light hearted at the beginning, but that quickly changed. It became a novel of suspense that kept me reading. An incident 30 years previously affects the lives of 3 families as one seeks revenge. My only complaint is that I didn't care for the ending at all. As I've noted before, it's almost as if the author came to her allotted number of pages and had to end the story.

I almost bailed on this because I had just finished The Husbands and it seemed like it was going to be mega similar but then I saw a friend with similar book taste gave it a rare 4 stars so I stuck with it... So glad I did. It was twisty adventure goodness on the cul-de-sac with minimal eye rolling required. Interesting with lots of unique relationship dynamics.
