Made for tv novel

The dialogue and the characters are all snappy. I could visualize some scenes as happening in a tv show. It’s ‘The Orville’ with a better plot and a more world-weary crew. I almost said it needed editing, but I realized the slow pace of the plot was purposefully done to better frame what was actually happening.

I will definitely be buying the next book. This is good stuff.

I get it now

It’s Star Trek, but written with a modern view and a more humorous edge. With a bit of Babylon 5, some Firefly, and a heaping helping of actual thought in the world building.

But it’s better than Star Trek. There’s an actual plot line and skullduggery and backstory and, most importantly, real characters!! They don’t present as caricatures of humanity with all the depth of a puddle; they have cultures that defy human reason. And the humans accept the differences.

I’m doing a bad job of explaining. I simply love Ensign Calloway’s stuttering incoherence and panicked utterances under stress, Warrick’s swearing in multiple languages, Nax’s nocturnal wailing, and Rabkins’ grouchy sarcasm.

By the way, one name for god is ‘Steve’, apparently. So there’s that.

I am buying the next book
