Holocaust survivor - Biografia breu
- Goldie Szachter Kalib was the youngest child of a wealthy, large, and close-knit Jewish family in the town of Bodzentyn, Poland. In 1942, during World War II, as the Germans were rounding up Jews in nearby villages, she was sent into hiding with a Christian neighbor. Later, she joined the rest of her family in the forced labor camp at Starachowice. In 1944, when she was 13, they were shipped to Auschwitz. In January 1945, as the Red Army approached, the prisoners were forced on a death march to Bergen-Belsen. Goldie survived along with two sisters to be liberated by the British. She emigrated to the USA in 1949. In 1954, she married Sylvan Kalib, an American cantor and composer, with whom she had two daughters. Her memoir, The Last Selection: A Child's Journey through the Holocaust, was published in 1996 and was adapted into an Emmy Award-winning television movie.
