An ARe Café Top Pick!

Ranch owners, Brett Turner and Willow Howling Moon Jenkins may be neighbors but definitely are not neighborly towards each other. Something happened in Brett's past that leaves him bitter towards all Native-Americans, including his beautiful neighbor. Willow tries to be tolerant of Brett but after surviving the tyranny of her late husband, she refuses to suffer his insensitivities without fighting back. Ironically enough, Brett and Willow's sons are like brothers and would love nothing more than to see their parents fall in love. They hatch a plan that actually works but for Brett and Willow the path to love is littered with murder, lies and deceit. It takes both of them pulling together with the help of seen and unseen friends to bring an end to a cruel mastermind's diabolic plot.

Sacred Ground by Rita Karnopp is a western-themed interracial romance enhanced by drama and moments of heightened suspense. One of the things that drew me to this novel was the uncommon pairing of these two characters. I was further drawn because early on it was evident many revelations were yet to come. Finally, the story creates a window into the world of Native-American practices, which is fascinating. I enjoyed this story. The plot kept developing and there were several unexpected twists. Sacred Ground is the first novel I've read by author Rita Karnopp but I am now a fan and will be looking forward to reading other works.

Brett Turner's farm keeps turning up with different problems and he is quick to blame his beautiful Indian neighbor Willow Howling Moon. As much as Brett might believe that Willow is out to sabotage him and his farm, he can't help but notice that she is a beautiful woman and despite his hatred for Indians, Brett can't fight off the erupting emotions for Willow running through him. When both Brett and Willow's sons run off together with a plan in motion, to get their parents to fall in love (just like in The Parent Trap), both Brett and Willow are forced to put their problems aside to help each other find their boys. While on this little adventure, Brett and Willow are slowly realizing that they have feelings for each other and soon figure out that Willow is not trying to sabotage Brett's farm, but someone else entirely. Minds set, both Brett and Willow follow their leads to confront their culprit, and soon will be shocked at who the mastermind behind the entire scheme really is.

I absolutely love Willow and Brett and loved when they gave into their feelings for each other. Especially, the automatic love and paternal instincts that they felt for the other persons son. I was a bit lost when Brett would go into his dreaming state, it's like there wasn't a buffer there for me saying "Brett fell asleep" it just continued on and on. By the time I was halfway through the dream, I was all "Holy #$@#! That was a dream." lol. But other then that, I really liked this book.

Even though I was lost as to when Brett's dream state was occurring, those parts were probably my favorite parts in the book. I liked the fact that Brett was getting in touch with his Indian side even though he was set in his ways and opinions on Indians. I felt these dreams played a big part in him figuring out who he is, so that he could believe in all that "mumbo jumbo" and come to terms with himself. Again with the dreams, those would also double and take responsibility in what I disliked about this book. But, only because I think there could have been a smoother transition from reality to dream.

Overall, this book was a good read and I would definitely recommend it. It's not too deep in thriller, but there is some mystery. The lighthearted love story totally makes up for the bad guys! lol. I'm just warning you now that the dreaming parts in this book might throw you off a bit, but if you stick with it I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

Summary:

Abi and her newborn daughter Kelly are in trouble. Someone has made repeated attempts on their life, and her sister Chyna thinks she knows exactly who: Trevor Madden, Abi’s husband. Once the perfect couple, Trevor has turned violent and abusive. Who is he mixed up with and why does he want to get rid of his wife and baby daughter? Abi takes Kelly and flees into the icy wilderness with the handsome and kind Police Officer, Miles Sandler. But with Trevor hot on their trail and Chyna getting dangerously close to the truth, will any of them come out of this alive?

Excerpt:

Chyna landed hard. The shock of discovery hit her full force when Trevor slammed the truck door shut. "I'll get you for this," she shouted at him through the open window. "See you in hell!"

She pulled herself upright in time to see him push the front fender of the truck. She dived for the door, but momentum sent her hard against the front window. Her forehead ached and the sound of cracking glass filled her with fear.

She turned and glared through the open driver’s side window and found herself shrinking from the cold gray, almost lifeless eyes that stared back at her. She hated the smirk on Trevor's face. Scraping sounds of metal against tree bark caused her to cringe. The vehicle slid from the tree, and began a downward slide.

She swore she heard Trevor laugh. She couldn't see anything but a black abyss. The vehicle picked up speed as it continued to skim the grassy embankment. She found herself suddenly tossed to the roof. The truck rolled, slamming her head against the dashboard, jamming her shoulder. A stabbing pain tore at her leg. "God, help me," she cried out loud. "I'll do whatever it takes, but please don't let me die. I have to be there for Abi and Kelly."

The vehicle slid to a stop. Chyna drew in a breath. In her foggy state something or someone warned her to concentrate, to be aware. She drew in a breath and smelled gasoline. A new fear gripped her senses.

Chyna tried to scream but no sound came, only a low, disbelieving moan escaped her lips.

"God, don't let me burn alive! Abi…Kelly…” She whispered. “I'm so sorry…."

Blurb:
Kidnapped by Rita Karnopp
Laura and Aaron Palmer’s marriage is over, but they’ve got newly adopted daughter Amie to consider. If they split up now, young Amie could be taken away from them both forever. Life is complicated, but it takes a turn for the worse when Laura finds Amie’s picture listed in an ad for missing and abducted children. But are the people who claim to be Amie’s biological parents really what they seem, or is something more sinister at play? Alienated emotionally from each other, and paralyzed with fear, can Laura and Aaron find a way to save their marriage and protect their adopted daughter?

Excerpt:

“She looks close to frozen already. Damn it, Black Angel, this isn’t right,” the man with a deep voice said. “I went along with some of your ideas, I admit that, but this is going too far.”

“Man, you ain’t got any idea what too far is. Try spending a few years with some good old boys in the slammer, then ya know what’s too far. ‘Sides, these folks know too much. Either they or you go down. What do ya prefer?”

Laura slowly opened her eyes to a narrow slit. She studied the rugged, thin, almost wolfish face of the man called Black Angel. She was surprised that he had pale skin and white hair. He was of brute stature and if she had to guess, at least six feet six inches tall. His black leather jacket and boots encrusted with silver studs made her think of a biker. She quickly figured it out: he was black-hearted and white like an angel. He was the kind of man who made his own rules and went his own way, the hell with everyone else.

“By the time they’re found, they won’t be tellin’ nothin’ to nobody.” Black Angel kicked the ground with his boot tip.
