Biografia breu
Joshua Keil started writing as a thirteen-year-old boy during a move across the country to Alaska. Inspired by the writings of Jack London, he soon found himself living a life reminiscent of that author’s tales of the North. Joshua spent his youth watching sled dog races, riding his horse, Duke, in the mountains, and fly-fishing with his brothers. He has worked on salmon boats in Bristol Bay, labored for the Alaska Railroad, and sailed with the Navy for seven years. While a student at the University of Nebraska he earned a living as an EMT during the heated political battle over the 911 ambulance contract in Lincoln.

A thoroughly enjoyable, almost haunting book! The narrator has on foot in the present, and another in the past. An engaging tale of a young man, sheltered and set in his ways, who is working in Alaska on a salmon boat. Meets and falls in love with a young lady who is so different than him that it is amazing to see it working out. Followed by tragedy. And almost rips your heart out. Fast forward to today, that young man is now a wildlife officer in Alaska, readying himself for his retirement. And forced to confront old demons and prejudices.
I really connected with the narrator. I think, those of us who have reached the narrator's age, all have past histories with regrets and tragedies that have affected who we are today. It was refreshing to see it written with such care and thoughtfulness.
The nature scenes are also very well written, and lend you to visualizing them easily.
All in all, an excellent book. I look forward to reading more of this author.

Very difficult book to put down. I put alot of things off to read this book -- every moment I could I was reading this book. I can not wait until Joshua Keil writes more and I hope that in the future I get the chance to read any more books that he writes. Thank you for picking me. I appreciate the opportunity to read a really good book. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a really good read.

Keil takes what might not sound like a very interesting premise - a paramedic and an EMT answer emergency calls during a county-wide debate over transferring EMS provision from a private company to the fire department in Lincoln, Nebraska - and manages to make it a story that you don't want to put down. He's obviously got a talent for putting together a compelling narrative arc, and for keeping the story moving.

This effort suffers from a few issues, though. Keil's exposition, particularly at the beginning, is a little clunky, as is some of his dialogue. There's a lot of musing back-and-forth, especially between groups of characters, that takes up space without really telling the reader anything. The story is strong enough to withstand those kinds of first-novel missteps, I think, but if that's something that bothers you as a reader, you probably won't enjoy this book.

Keil's writing improves over the course of the book, I think, as he gets comfortable in the skin of his story and his characters. The main characters are not badly drawn, and they're able to carry the weight of the story ably; the supporting characters, particularly at the fire department, are numerous, but Keil's made them easy to keep track of.

This isn't a great book, but it's an interesting, enjoyable read, and I'm really curious to see where Keil goes next with his writing.

I received this book from LibraryThing.com to read and review and I am really glad that I was chosen to be one of the people to get it! I could not put this book down and put off quite a bit of housework because I didn't want to stop reading. From the very beginning of the book you become engrossed in the characters, their personalities, and how they go through their lives. I felt that the character Eric was very likable and I felt for him being a new EMT on the job and not having as much experience as his partner. The fire department characters were easy to hate, it made you feel so horrible for the EMS crew of Eastern Ambulance. I cannot wait until Mr. Keil writes another book and I really look forward to reading it!… (més)
