Very good history of Sherman's march from Tennessee thru Georgia & into S. Carolina. Not a typical Civil War battle book as it spends more time on the locals and the effects on local areas.

A historical account of strategic aerial bombardments up to the bombings in Japan that ended WWII. showing how doctrine implements an idea, and how the reality of practice and its outcome can form a feedback loop that alters doctrine. Example: the RAF tries daylight bombing, loses to many planes with little to show for it, then shifts over to night bombing and develops the technical tools to make that possible (Oboe radio beacon guidance, H2X radar, Lancaster heavy bomber).

By ending the story in 1945, Kennett reinforces his conclusion that strategic bombing did not turn out to be THE doctrine/practice that won WWII. Bombing played a role in destroying the enemy nation's capacity to manufacture and transport war materiel to the front. It could not break civilian morale.
Dust jacket notes: "In 1849, the Austrians launched explosive balloons against Venice, the first air attack on a city. In 1945, atomic bombs dropped from the B-29 Enola Gay destroyed Hiroshima. This highly readable book tells the dramatic story of the development of strategic bombing, not only from the military point of view but in all its ethical and international legal ramifications. Featuring many never-before-published photographs, the book covers all the outstanding events of a 160-year period: the first balloon ascent, in 1783; the aerial campaigns of both world wars; the development of American and European aircraft and air forces; theorists and prophets of air power in Europe and the United States, such as Giulio Douhet and Billy Mitchell; the rise and fall of the Luftwaffe; and efforts to control the spread of aerial warfare. Professor Kennett shows how the bombing of military targets gradually gave way to widespread attacking of civilian ones and chronicles the development and consequences of such strategies as precision bombing, area bombing, and morale bombing....

Only a decade or so after the Wright Brothers' first flight, the airplane went to war, which proves that when motivated by self-preservation government can move rather quickly. While most of us pilots have a rather myopic view of the importance of the duels in the air by the likes of Rickenbacker and von Richtofen, Lee Kennett puts aviation's role in the "War to End All Wars" into proper perspective as more of a supporting player--but certainly one that would quickly move to center stage just two decades later.… (més)
