- Ethnobotanist Beatrice H. Krauss enriched the lives of innumerable people through her research, teaching, writing, and volunteer service. The first woman to earn a degree in agriculture from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, she later taught ethnobotany there and received several awards. Krauss was a plant physiologist and morphologist at the Pineapple Research Institute for 42 years, and a staff member at the Lyon Arboretum for 15 years. She founded the Manoa Valley History Project, served as president of the Hawaiian Botanical Society, and received awards from the Historic Hawaii Foundation and the Hawaii Pacific Gerontological Society.
