Jarrett J. Krosoczka used to be a goofy kid that liked to draw. Now, he is an award-winning published author/illustrator with many books to his credit. Six months after graduating RISD, Jarrett carried his portfolio into New York City and landed a contract for his first book. He immediately ran to a pay phone to share the good news with his grandparents. Good Night, Monkey Boy was published on June 12, 2001, and Jarrett has since been busy producing many more books. His work has been short listed by Newsweek, USA Today, The Boston Globe, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. Jarrett's book Punk Farm, which is about a group of raucous farm animals who form an underground rock band, is currently in development as a feature film.

{My thoughts} – I am a huge fan of Jarrett J. Krosoczka’s illustrations in the Jedi Academy books. When I’d seen this book was coming out I wanted to read it so that I could learn more about the artist and writer. Jarrett didn’t have what would be considered a normal upbringing but to him and his family it was by all accounts normal. It was all he or they knew.

As an adult I am able to relate to a lot of the issues and struggles mentioned within the pages of this book. I can relate to being raised by my grandparents. I can relate to them not always getting along and lots of arguing and fighting. I can relate to the alcohol abuse by one grandparent. Although. in my case it was my grandfather that did the drinking and my grandmother that did most of the yelling. I can relate to not having a mother or a father around. I can relate to having a mother being in and out of my life, but for different reasons then that of what Jarrett’s mother had gone through. I can relate to not knowing or meeting my father until I was well into my teenage years. I can relate to considering my grandparents were my only parents. I can relate to all of that and more within the pages of this book.

Jarrett might not have had the ideal childhood, but he did something that most people don’t. He didn’t let himself become a victim of circumstances and situation and he made the most out of what life had offered him. He proved to his grandparents that his true passion was in his art and they supported him attending art school. Through that support from his family he was able to make a name for himself. He was able to be someone. He was able to be better then his own mother and father.

I really enjoyed reading through this book. At many points it made me feel sad for him and what he’d been through. At other points it made me want to laugh and cry. Through his words and illustrations he was able to pull me into the story of his life. He was able to show me what he’d been through, what he’d overcome and what he was able to achieve.

I recommend this book for any child that is mature enough to handle the content and the language within it’s pages. There is so much that can be learned from within the pages of this book and it would be a crime to prevent children from reading it and seeing that they can become more, with the proper support and desire to be more then their circumstances.

{My thoughts} – Victor is about to embark on his final year at Jedi Academy. He is less then enthusiastic about the fact that his sister isn’t going to be attending school with him this year. He also isn’t to thrilled about all the changes that start taking place shortly after the school term begins.

Victor is a good kid and he is strong with the Force. He has a great head on his shoulders and many wonderful friends that like him for being him. His teachers accept him and understand that he does whatever he is capable of doing in regards to school to the best of his ability. There really isn’t a whole lot that can be done when a child does their best and sometimes falls short of it being good enough. In his case he seems to work hard enough that he passes most of his classes with a C or higher.

This year he has the lead in the school musical and he is looking forward to it, however he is also working on the set and trying to keep his studies up. He learns all to quickly that he has over extended himself and decides to step down from set design. Once her does that all these new changes start taking place at Jedi Academy. The principal is forced to step down. Their favorite teachers are fired and or their favorite droids get scheduled to be reprogrammed. It’s a lot of change. It takes Victor and his friends to get to the bottom of it and sort it all out. They soon figure out what’s been going on and do everything they can to right the wrongs that have been taking place within the school.

As I was reading this book I was wondering if it was going to be the last in the series. It doesn’t appear to be the case though. I noticed on GoodReads that there is a book seven listed. I am looking forward to seeing when this book is released and reading it. These books are very much beneficial to children. They help them to see that other children deal with many of the same issues that they do on a regular basis and that they are not alone in how they think and feel about things.

I think that any child that loves Star Wars will enjoy reading this book. I love the illustrations within the pages. They give you a lot to look at and explore. I enjoy reading books like this because they are fun reads. I think that any child would be lucky to have this book added to their home or school library.

{My thoughts} – Victor is back at Jedi Academy this year. He is participating in his first full year of school there. He has proven that he is strong in the Force and that he has a lot of potential. His sister Christina is also strong in the Force with a lot of potential. This is his sisters last year of school and there is a gossip leak about her being a Sith and joining the Dark Side going around school. This doesn’t make Victor feel very proud of his sister, but he stands beside her and tries to prove that she is good and not bad.

When the book wraps up so much has happened and so much has changed, that it had a nice twist. I really enjoyed reading this book and learning more about the characters within it. I do admit that I still miss the original characters. However, I think these are starting to grow on me. This book was a nice addition to the story and gave more insight to what kind of characters they are and what to kind of expect in future books. I look forward to reading the next book in the series very soon.

{My thoughts} – I have grown to love this series. It is a fun graphic novel set based loosely on Star Wars. The cover is nicely illustrated and eye catching. The illustrations within the book go hand and hand with the text, helping to better explain what is taking place within the storyline.

This is the first book since Jarrett Krosockza had taken over the series that the storyline isn’t based solely on the new character Victor. Instead this book is all about his sister Christina and I think it is a nice addition to the series.

Christina is going to a new school to learn under a new Master. She has some issues getting herself grounded and staying in focus. She reads a zoologist type magazine in her free time and when it comes down to it, all the reading helps her in her studying to be a Jedi. Her classmates teased her to the point where she wanted to quit, but she held on and she kept at it. Eventually all her hard work paid off and she learned that she was going to make a great Jedi.

I think this book is a great reminder for children. I think that it can help them to see that even though things are going real well, that they have the potential to improve. It shows them that as long as they believe they can do it, they will be able to do it and become successful.

I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading the next one in the series when it comes out!
