Marcel Kurpershoek was born in 1949 in the Hague. He studied Arabic at Leiden University and at Cairo University. In 1974 he joined the Dutch foreign service and was posted to Egypt, Syria and in 1986 to Saudi Arabia. He is the author of several travelogues and books on Bedouin poetry. Het boek is prachtig geschreven en geeft een mooi beeld van een verdwijnende cultuur. Een onbetwistbaar hoogtepunt onder de Nederlandse reisverhalen en een goede aanvulling op de klassieker "Arabian sands *****" van Wilfred Thesiger.
