D(avid) H(erbert) Lawrence was born on September 11, 1885. His father was a coal miner and Lawrence grew up in a mining town in England. He always hated the mines, however, and frequently used them in his writing to represent both darkness and industrialism, which he despised because he felt it was mostra'n més scarring the English countryside. Lawrence attended high school and college in Nottingham and, after graduation, became a school teacher in Croyden in 1908. Although his first two novels had been unsuccessful, he turned to writing full time when a serious illness forced him to stop teaching. Lawrence spent much of his adult life abroad in Europe, particularly Italy, where he wrote some of his most significant and most controversial novels, including Sons and Lovers and Lady Chatterly's Lover. Lawrence and his wife, Frieda, who had left her first husband and her children to live with him, spent several years touring Europe and also lived in New Mexico for a time. Lawrence had been a frail child, and he suffered much of his life from tuberculosis. Eventually, he retired to a sanitorium in Nice, France. He died in France in 1930, at age 44. In his relatively short life, he produced more than 50 volumes of short stories, poems, plays, essays, travel journals, and letters, in addition to the novels for which he is best known. Ressenyes
I read some short stories and "A Boy in the Bush" by Lawrence before I read this books. It was a dissapointment. In this novel there is none of the sublime romantic darkness of his other works. It is still a pretty good novel, however, he can be so much better. I recommend you to read the Prussian Officer (one of his short stories) to see how just how good he can be.
Fascinating essays on literature and art from one of the great novelists of the twentieth century. His take on the novel and its stature alone is worth the price of the book. New York Review Books succeeds again.
How do you rate a book like this? It's essentially graphic sex scenes amid discussions about various aspects of English society at the time. I see the value in the book as a commentary in a way of the changing social picture in England following WWI. I do believe it is an important novel for that reason, although it's not something I would generally read and would only recommend with caution!

This is a short story by D.H. Lawrence and it is set during WWI. Two late twenties females are trying to farm. One Nellie is masculine and Jill is feminine. The farm animals (poultry) are harassed by a fox until there is nothing really left of the farm. They had two cows; one ran off looking for a mate and the other pregnant and they were afraid so they sold it before it calved. Nellie tries to kill the fox but ends up entranced by the fox. One day a young man comes to the door of their home. He kills the fox and he becomes the fox who menaces March and Banford.
It's a short novel with themes of gender roles, sexuality, and femininity. The conjecture would be that Nellie and Jill are in a relationship that is disrupted by the dominate male sexual relationship that is destructive and violent.… (més)
