A collection of fascinating Rhode Island historical anecdotes sadly suffering from a poor writing style I wished I could overlook but couldn't—It seems to suffer from Wikipedia Syndrome, where biographical articles are just strings of trivia items phrased in boring simple sentences and sorted in roughly-chronological order. The first few chapters are about interesting subjects—Robert the Hermit in particular is exactly the kind of historical eccentric I enjoy reading about, and personal touches—like the note that the author's mother received her smallpox vaccination from former Governor Lucius Garvin—are charming, but I wasn't interested enough to keep plowing through Laxton's prose.… (més)
