I discovered after reading this that it’s the author’s debut novel. Quite an entrance, Ms Lea!

Despite a teensy bit slow and repetitive start (compelling for all that), it eventually picks up pace and turns into a very confident, virtually unputdownable novel.

Rachel’s heart sinks when she unwittingly falls on a Twitter message on her laptop, arranging a romantic rendez-vous. Assuming it can only be her husband, she follows him to confirm her worst fears. What she sees, though, is much worse: his car involved in a hit and run. Did she really just witness her husband deliberately run someone over?

Her best friend and business partner, Suzie, has her own worries: her fiancé…whom Rachel never seems to be able to meet…appears to have gone awol, won’t answer her calls, and her credit card is being refused everywhere. And why is that very unpleasant man threatening her?

There are enough clues fairly early on to put two and two together. But your journey to four is truly gripping.

A very accomplished debut by Lea, and I hope to read more by her. I would recommend she gets herself a new editor, though. Missing ‘was sat’ and ‘was stood’ is very naughty...

As a single mother with a highly sensitive 8-year-old son and a very tight financial situation, Ruth already has a lot to carry. When one morning she comes across Rob in front of the school where she works as a secretary, she cannot believe what she sees: the man who pretended to be single when she spent a night with him obviously is happily married with kids. Ruth is furious and so is Janine, Rob’s wife, when she realises what she is witnessing. Ruth made her biggest enemy with Janine, the one woman in the community who is great at networking and friends with everybody. The same day, the school gets a letter demanding Ruth’s lay-off because of how she behaved in front of children. But this is only the beginning of a totally nasty fight.

Zoe Lea’s novel is a real page turner. It is unbelievable what happens to Ruth who seems to be a caring mother who’d do anything for her boy and who only tries to live a decent life after the divorce. Nobody wants to believe her and everything is simply turned around making her appear to be to aggressor. The most awful thing is that you get the impression that money and power are more important than the truth and that those who are already at the end of the food chain hardly have a chance to be heard and taken seriously.

A fast paced novel that was hard to put down. I was hooked immediately and liked the development of the events, a downward spiral which once set in motion couldn’t be stopped anymore. With each chapter, Ruth’s actions became more drastic since she was pushed more and more in a corner and like a threatened animal, did not see another way out of the menacing situation. Yet, her character is not too obvious, I started questioning her more and more towards the end which, actually, I totally liked since I couldn’t be too sure about what to believe anymore.

All in all, very entertaining and enjoyable.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book in exchange for my review.
I absolutely loved this book. It kept me guessing at every turn. Every initial impression it gives you is incorrect, and I had so much fun trying to pick apart the threads as I went along and solve the mystery! It was much more twisted than I had imagined (which I liked). Slightly reminiscent of Karin Slaughters writing style. I will definitely be seeking out more books by this author now. The distinctly British feel the book had added to the fun for me. Pick this one up for sure if you like to unravel a good mystery!… (més)

If He Wakes is a rather twisty tale of two friends, Rachel and Suzie. They're working together in events management and they've just got a huge party to organise. And then their worlds are blown apart. Rachel witnesses something shocking regarding her husband and Suzie's fiancé seems to have disappeared taking her money with him.

Well, in fact, that is just the tip of the iceberg and, as the book progresses, we learn more and more about each woman, their past and the worrying turn their lives seem to be currently taking.

The book is told in alternate chapters from both Rachel and Suzie's point of view, Rachel's in the first person and Suzie's in the third person. I liked the way each woman's story unfolded gradually and how I, as the reader, was able to view the whole sorry tale and see how it fitted together.

As suspense thrillers go, this is certainly full of suspense and thrills. When it started I wasn't sure where it was going and how everything was linked and it did take a while for it all to start to come together, but once it did it kind of came from nowhere and I was really surprised about the turn it took. The author definitely has the ability to shock.

If He Wakes is a fast-paced and exciting story. It's full of nail-biting moments and builds up the tension perfectly until the shocking conclusion is revealed.
