The story of Paradise Found occurs in 1840 and reminds me of one of those great epic movies with its intricate plot, rich sceneries, and interesting and memorable characters. This is a very lengthy book but there isn’t a dull moment. From one page to the next is an adventure waiting to unfold. The villains run numerous, but good always outnumbers evil. Alyssa is the epitome of the strong woman, no matter her color. She is a mixed race woman who could pass if she chose to but is proud of every drop of each ancestry blood that makes her who she is. Marc is a worldly man having traveled far and wide, and views Alyssa as a beautiful woman, not a mixed race woman. Her mixed ancestry during that time made it illegal for him to marry her, but Marc gladly and proudly made Alyssa his wife and his life. They are a remarkable couple and equal in fortitude. The ending is bittersweet, but mostly sweet and I must say that this story stayed with me for a long time.

For Alyssa Verdieu home is Beau Elysees, a paradise created in the Louisiana Swamps as a refuge for people of mixed descent who are rejected by the outside world. Unfortunately when Alyssa’s father passes on, followed shortly by her mother, a cruel imposter takes over. Marc Ghiradelli loves and lives on the high seas. At his father’s request he sails to Beau Elysees to assist Alyssa. Marc is saddened because he arrives to learn Alyssa’s parents are dead and the imposter has turned paradise into hell. With Marc’s help, they rid Beau Elysees of the imposter, but their troubles are far from over. To secure her rights to the land, Marc agrees to marry Alyssa but he doesn’t tell her of his personal reason for marrying her. Marc has loved Alyssa for as long as he can remember. Alyssa fell in love with Marc from the letters he wrote but she wants him for love, not duty. In the fight to keep her home, they both come close to the brink of death several times. Through it all they stick together and their love blossoms into something larger than Beau Elysees or the new place they call home.

Beautiful pictures with accompanying text of 21 colonial mission structures in California. Index, Forward and an Introduction which covers the Spanish Empire in California, how the missions were built and lastly secularization and reconstruction. Often copied from more famous European masters, the art work is usually quaint. Much of the allure about the missions is that many are intact in original form and color. Structural and artistic restoration is painstakingly done, often with the help public funds. The missions are still tourist destinations, as well as religious pilgrimage sites.… (més)

Beautiful book. Of course it's not very indicative of the average Mexican garden. But this is a coffee table book, not an anthropological snap shot. This book is geared more toward public or wealthy people's gardens which are gorgeous to look at and gives some great ideas.
