Als Hannah von ihrem Freund Simon erfährt, dass dieser nicht mehr lange zu leben hat, möchte sie ihm ein perfektes Jahr bescheren. Sie schenkt ihm ein Filofax mit Einträgen, die ihm Lebensmut und Freude bringen soll. Aber Simon will nicht leiden und hat sein Ende anders geplant. So hängt er eine Tasche mit dem Tagebuch und Geld an den Lenker eines Fahrrads.
So kommt die Tasche zu Jonathan, der seinen täglichen Lauf auch am Neujahrsmorgen nicht ausfallen lässt. Da das Fundbüro an diesem Tag geschlossen hat, behält Jonathan seinen Fund. Das hat ungeahnte Auswirkungen auf ihn.
Wir erfahren die Geschichte abwechselnd aus der Sicht von Hannah und Jonathan. Das Buch lässt sich sehr flüssig lesen und wir erleben, wie die beiden in diesem Jahr durch ein Wechselbad der Gefühle müssen. Aber auch beim Lesen des Buches erleben wir dieses Wechselbad, es ist zum Heulen traurig und es ist manchmal witzig.
Hannah ist ein sehr positiv eingestellter Mensch. Kleine Nackenschläge sind für sie nur der Antrieb nach Besserem. Mit ihrer Freundin Lisa hat sie gerade erst die „Rasselbande“ gegründet, in der Kinder beaufsichtigt werden und viel Spaß haben sollen. Allerdings ging mir ihr naiver Optimismus anfangs auch manchmal auf die Nerven. Diesen Optimismus legt sie auch nicht ab, als sie von Simons Krankheit erfährt. Doch im Laufe der Geschichte muss auch sie erkennen, dass das Leben auch negative Seiten hat.
Jonathan lebt ein privilegiertes, aber einsames Leben, welches auch sehr eingefahren ist. Er macht seine Sache schon immer so und würde sie wahrscheinlich auch immer weiter so machen, wenn ihm nicht dieses Filofax in die Finger gefallen wäre. Mir kam er vor wie ein alter Mann und auch mit seiner besserwisserischen Art konnte ich nicht viel anfangen.
Aber das Schicksal hat bei beiden das Leben durcheinandergewirbelt und so gibt es eine Entwicklung, mit der sie selbst wohl nicht gerechnet haben. Da ist es schön, dass Hannah nicht nur von ihren Eltern unterstütz wird, sondern dass Lisa eine wirklich gute Freundin ist. Aber auch Jonathan findet Menschen, die es gut mit ihm meinen und ihm die Meinung sagen und er entdeckt, dass er die Vergangenheit auch mal hinterfragen muss.
Und Simon? Ich kann sein Handeln verstehen und doch mochte ich ihn nicht besonders, denn mir war er zu ichbezogen.
Wohin die Geschichte führen wird, war schon vorauszusehen, aber das Ende ist dann so, dass es glaubhaft und nicht kitschig ist. Auch war mir der Zufall zu oft im Spiel. Dennoch hat es Spaß gemacht, diese berührende Geschichte zu lesen.… (més)

I'm pretty split on this one. I had added it to my TBR long time ago and I don't really remember why. My first surprise was that it was translated from German and set in Hamburg. Northern Germans are pretty close to my mentality (Latvian), so I got some strange behavior what others maybe wouldn't get. I pretty much enjoyed it - it kept me reading (or listening). I think it's marketed as chick lit but it deals with some heavy subjects and should come with strong trigger warnings (🛑 suicide). The pacing was really off for me - it was really stretched in the beginning and then made some big leaps in the end and finished abruptly. Nevertheless, I liked the character and story development, and would read by the author again.… (més)

Ugh. A few years ago I was in the middle of a “I need to read more ‘General Fiction” kick and saw an advertisement (or something) for this—it wasn’t on a blog, I know that much. Something about the description appealed to me, and I got a good Whispersync deal, so the audio and ebook versions sat around since. I wanted to go through the ebook rather than the audio initially—but never seemed to find the time. But I finally broke down and just wanted to get it finished, it’s been calling to me for so long.

I should have held off a little (or a lot) longer. This book didn’t work for me in just about every imaginable way. Within a chapter or two you could see how the whole thing was going to go—including the “big surprise twist”. This is fine if the ride’s enjoyable. But it really wasn’t. The comedy wasn’t all that funny. The drama felt contrived (it’s fiction—all of it is contrived, I realize—but there’s “contrived” and there’s “feeling contrived”). The introspection and self-discovery really didn’t click for me, either.

The best thing I can say about it is that the arc of the publisher of only captial-L Literature and noteworthy Non-Fiction discovering the value and appeal of popular fiction was pleasant (and I just spoiled that…oops). A little self-serving for the writer of popular fiction, but I’m not going to criticize that.
