This is Machado's first novel. I think it's a great debut. He is a great storyteller who unvarnished brings everything down on paper and you get the feeling of seeing the figure through his eyes and experience. The story starts with Otto (protagonist and painter of unemployed), violent injured sitting in a Brazilian prison and is interviewed by the director after the events. Otto has an influential friend in the party, so he will not be tortured. The warden, who listens to Otto on his day off must be patient because Otto can not tell his story succinctly but far swings back. One quickly realizes that Otto's heart for those seeking help is open, even if it takes himself in greatest danger.
It was a fast and exciting reading. I can highly recommend this book.… (més)
