A good pocket history of South Africa. However, it was written in the 1960s, and is quite out of date. The book is balanced, telling the reader that from the start the relationship between European and the Africans was not satisfactory - attention was not paid to the 'rights' of the original inhabitants. It showed that politics and the wish for freedom (sometimes read anarchy) led to the movement of Europeans (mainly those of mainland Europe heritage i.e. Dutch and French) east and northwards. It was for the lack of order in the newly settled areas that led to the British forcing their will. Then it was politics and money (in the mines) that led to military conflict. And finally it was politics of organised labour that sowed the seeds for apartheid.… (més)
