- Marla was born in Tacoma, Washington, the “City of Destiny.” Born with a natural flair for acting, she also had a deep interest in reading and writing poetry and short stories. At the age of sixteen she was living in Iran with her family and learning to speak French and Persian. Marla’s family moved back to Washington State during the revolution in Iran, where she finished her last year in high school and one year in college. After that she moved to Hollywood to pursue an acting career where she did television commercials and print modeling. In the early nineties, she moved to Chicago where she found that she could use her dating experience to help others. She has been working in Los Angeles as a matchmaker since 2001 and has successfully introduced many couples who have gotten married! Marla’s work inspires people and gives them hope that they can find their soul mate. Marla married her own in Mexico City in 2003. A world traveler and culture nut, Marla describes herself as having a French flair, a Persian heart, Italian fire, and Mexican taste buds!

In her memoir Hearts On the Line Marla is candid and sincere and takes the reader through those private details of her life which not only include her life as a real life Beverly Hills matchmaker but also her relationship with the love of her life, her husband Adolfo. I love how Marla is so down to earth and even though our lives are so different and we live on opposite ends of the country, I found so many similarities between her life and mine, which is not only ironic, but left me feeling even more connected to her.
In these chapters of her life Marla shares her struggles of working for her self-centered boss who is going to extreme measures to bring in money to the high-end dating service during the current recession . Gary goes about walking all over his staff and discreetly turning the dating service Marla has helped bring too much success into an escort service. As Marla strives to do the best she can at her job, considering the circumstances with her boss and her demanding clients. She scrambles for support from her husband who although honestly only wants the best for both of them, does not see the severity of how stressful a situation Marla is in. One common trait I noticed with Marla’s husband which is common with some men, including my own husband is how practical they can be. Adolfo worries about their financial future should Marla decide to leave her job and makes it a point to remind her often. However for Marla a true Gemini, those daily affirmations she uses to calm and soothe herself from her stressful job are no match for her bosses latest antics.
Marla is a gifted writer who can take everyday situations and those even ridiculously insane and weave humor through them to share with her readers. Although a little more serious and grounded than her previous novel Hearts On the Line still left me cracking-up. Yet at the same time also feeling sorry for her situations and at times her situation. I also felt badly for some of her clients, who deep down seem so lonely and may never truly find real love due to their unrealistic expectations. Hearts On the Line is truly about one womans search and discovery of her own individuality and how going with her intuition and those perceptions lead her to make the best choices for her and her husband, whether her husband wants to admit to it or not. When one choses to do the right thing and has faith in God he opens many other doors near the ones we may choose to close.… (més)
