The book is a collection of "essays" on religious overtones regarding various cultural issues in the United states. For example, the devotion demonstrated by people regarding the game of football and the reactions of people who frequent Jimmy Buffet concerts are looked as if they were followers of a religion. Some areas were enjoyable although some of the areas were not as well done. Some inconsistancies were pointed out such as Springsteen and Buffet songs about being a loner and living a difficult and at times an impoverished life. The section on Judge Judy and her following was an area where I was unsure if the author was looking at interpretions of her show having religious overtones regarding an all wise and knowing female figure, or perhaps the section was to be a comentary on the often embarrasing state of our current culture regarding a need to be shamed. Both ideas have evidence in the book.

Many of the reliogious interpretations strikes me as commentary about a consumer based society having lost its way and rather than being about a society finding religious outlets. I found many areas indicative of cultural immaturity rather than examples religious seekings. It seemed to me as if having a book about seeing cultural celebrities as special beings and as reliogious icons might be more appropriate. This book seemed to focus on the importance that people place on belonging to a group and not the issue of why we as a society seem to want to spend our own lifes belonging to these groups at the cost of not living ourselves.

Why do so many find satisfaction in following what is deemed popular in some circles?
