We got this book for its linguistic content, but there was so much more literary information that we had in other sources and it took up so much room that we passed it on.

Tom McArthur surveys the English language in a snapshot of how it is used and how it varies continent by continent throughout the world, concluding with reflections on what it means to say English is a world language.

Fascinating, but more of a reference work to dip into rather than read straight through.

A thorough-going place-by-place guide to the way in which English is used,(mostly as a primary language, but also as a second language) around the world. It starts by considering, separately, the many regional varieties of the language in the British Isles, and then moves on to North America, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and Australasia. It covers pronunciation, vocabulary, and usage, and also has sections on English vs. American English, and on World English. Informative and well written.
