Tense and engaging collection of short stories by Enríquez. Channelling Sheridan le Fanu, the author combines gritty social commentary about Argentina's difficult 20th Century with the otherworldliness of horror fiction to create a collection that impact the reader from the cerebral cortex to the solar plexus.

This book is formatted as a very subjective multiple choice test. In each of the sections the author asks you to select the most appropriate or inappropriate answer, or read a passage of text and answer questions.

I feel like I missed out on some of the key interactions with this book because I read it on my kindle and so I didn't quite get the chance to scribble all over it and circle my answers like I'd wanted to.

This book is broken up into two sections, the first, which I'll say focuses more on Zambra's prose, and the second which is more of a narrative. I liked both for different reasons and I feel like they were distinctly different. I feel like the first section of the book really made me an active reader and creator of the text whereas the second section I was much more of an observer.

Sometimes I found this book a little hard to get through or that it didn't engage me as much, purely because it was set out like a test but I'd love to read more of Zambra's work to compare it to this one.

If you're looking for a book that will really involve you in the reading process or if you're looking for a book that has really interesting books to talk about in a book club I would definitely recommend this book.
