Ari McKay is the professional pseudonym for Arionrhod and McKay, who collaborate on original m/m fiction. They began writing together in 2004 and finished their first original full length novel in 2011. Recently, they’ve begun collaborating on designing and creating costumes to wear and compete in at Sci Fi conventions, and they share a love of yarn and cake.

Arionrhod is an avid costumer, knitter, and all-around craft fiend, as well as a professional systems engineer. Mother of two human children and two dachshunds who think they are human, she is a voracious reader with wildly eclectic tastes, devouring romance novels, military science fiction, horror stories and Shakespeare with equal glee. She is currently preparing for the zombie apocalypse.

McKay is an English teacher who has been writing for one reason or another most of her life. She also enjoys knitting, reading, cooking, and playing video games. She has been known to knit in public. Given she has the survival skills of a gnat, she’s relying on Arionrhod to help her survive the zombie apocalypse.

This was a fun friends to lovers story set against the backdrop of a Steampunk Convention. Trey is very much into Steampunk and the costumes that go along with it but when he spots a perky butt poured into a pair of leather pants all other costumes fly out the window. Everywhere Trey goes in the convention he spots what he nicknames The Pants as he never manages to catch a look at the man's face. When the two men finally do meet face to face they are surprised to find that they are casual friends from work. The Pants is really Joss, a fellow computer geek that Trey had found attractive but thought that they had too little in common to date. Joss turns out to be everything that Trey has been looking for and vice versa. I found Trey and Joss to be a fun and likeable couple with inventive sexual appetites. That Joss tended to "top from the bottom" made the story even more interesting. Ms McKay wove a lot into this quirky short story and the Steampunk Convention was a delightful backdrop for the story. The insta-love was a bit of a let down but can be forgiven by the length of the story although the sex scene could have been trimmed to build more of the men's growing relationship. I was very happy with the HEA ending and recommend this fun sort to anyone looking for a romance story with a quirky twist.… (més)

Halloween is the time for ghost and goblin stories and this is the best short ghost story that I've read so far out of Torquere's collection. Micah Harrison fell in love with the old Delaney House and its beautiful view of the Smoky Mountains. There are a lot of work to be done on the old house but he was able to move in and do the work. The house was said to be haunted though Micah didn't put much stock in that until one night he was awakened by something caressing his hair. Micah finally met the ghost, Richard Delany, and the two feel a strong attraction. The problem is that it's tough having sex with a ghost. Ms McKay bends the rules and allows Richard to pleasure Micah on Halloween and to send Micah a very special gift. This sweet romance story borders on being a bittersweet as Richard and Micah cannot have a real relationship as lovers. It is also a happy story in that the two men get a lot from one another in the time that they do spend together. I liked the way that Richard's story unfolded and how Micah just accepted Richard for whom he is/was. The contrast between the modern speech and that of the 100 year dead Richard added some charm to the story which read both well and easily. I strongly recommend this excellent story to any paranormal lover.… (més)

Room For One More is Book #8 in the Herc’s Mercs series. It stars Joe Morrissey, Brian Finnegan, and Drew Martin. This is told in third person from Joe, Finn and Drew’s povs.

Herc’s Mercs is a group of men in an elite security group. Their services range from mundane activities such as protecting politicians, to undercover ops. I didn’t read any of the seven books before this one and I didn’t have any trouble in following a long with this particular story. A few men and their relationships from previous books were mentioned, but nothing so much as to distract from this book’s storyline.

Joe and Brian, aka ‘Finn’, have been in an open relationship for eight years. They haven’t married for the reason that Joe is monogamous and Finn is polyamorous. This is hard on Joe. He’s all about making Finn happy and Finn, in my opinion, is all about making Finn happy. Finn came across as a spoiled boy who wanted things his way and he knew that Joe would give him what he wanted. When Finn met Drew, he just took it as fact that Joe would be okay with it because he didn’t really mind that Finn slept around. In fact, it was the total opposite. It hurt Joe more because Finn fell for Drew. Drew walks into the middle of Joe and Finn’s relationship and he’s a bit arrogant. He wants Finn, and Finn will let Joe decide if Drew should leave, which places the burden on Joe. Finn knows that Joe wants him to be happy, so Joe won’t tell Finn to get rid of Drew, but this will make Joe miserable. This story reminded me of trying to convert a monogamist into a polyamorist, like turning someone who’s gay to straight, or straight to gay. That, to me is wrong.

I really felt bad for Joe throughout this story. He had many past issues and Finn and Drew weren’t really the best people to help him since they had their own agenda, even though the ending of the book was a HEA. It just felt like a manipulated happiness. I thought Joe got the bad end of the deal. Even at the end of the story, I wasn’t convinced that Joe fell for Drew. I felt Finn and Drew pushed Joe too much to accept the trio. In the beginning, Drew didn’t respect Joe, he thought it’d be great to convince Joe they could be lovers, like it was a game. Drew just wants to manipulate Joe. In fact, he keeps pushing Joe to talk, when Finn told him to give Joe space. Drew disrespected that. Drew also came across like a therapist; he seemed to have all the answers. I don’t know if that’s because he went to therapy, but he was a bit too Marty Stu for me. There were other issues between the trio that bothered me, like Finn telling Drew he wouldn’t tell Joe he loved him unless it was necessary, and the very next day he tells him. There's one point in the story where Drew explains to Joe about how Finn and he think about love. "It's not pie." My thoughts are if it's not pie, then Finn and Drew will find more guys to give their love to, even if they promise never to do it. They aren't geared to not falling in love with more men. But they promise Joe they won't, which Joe believes, but I don't think he should. He's just setting himself up to get hurt.

I enjoy dialogue in stories more than I do monologue, but I do have to agree with some of the other reviewers, there was too much dialogue in this story. I’ve met men that do like to talk a lot, but I can’t see them talking about their feelings as much as the characters did in this book unless they were in a therapy session together. It didn’t seem realistic.

The part of this book I liked was the kidnapping and the undercover operation that Joe went on. The authors did a good job with that part of the story, and Joe’s emotional trauma to the operation and what he saw. It's the characters, Finn and Drew I didn't like, they didn't work for me. Joe I liked. I’ve read other stories by these authors and enjoyed them. It’s probably this particular book that didn’t work for me, since many other readers have enjoyed it.

I give Room for One More, 3 Stars.

I received an ARC for an honest and unbiased opinion of this book.

Out of the Ashes is the first book in the ‘Asheville Arcana’ series. The stars are Eli Hammond, an Alpha werewolf, and Arden Gilmarin, a half-elf. The story is told in third person from Eli and Arden’s pov.

This book contains mystery, demons, shifters, mages, vampires and a whole lot more. It fits perfect into stories to read for October. I’m a wimp when it comes to reading horror or spooky tales so I avoid them, but this story didn’t have too much graphic detail that I couldn’t read it. I’ll likely end up reading the next two books to find out what happens to Arden’s friends and how the demon incursion is solved.

I liked this story. It was entertaining and I didn’t want to put it down. It’s a mix of mystery and romance, where the mysterious paranormal happenings takes up about the first sixty percent of the book. It involved learning about the characters, the demons and the mystery, the feel of the story was more intense. I definitely noticed a change in overall character of the story once it reached the last forty percent. It shifted to being a romance and it didn’t feel like a paranormal mystery as much. I mean it still was, but the focus changed to the romance. It changed enough I thought maybe one author wrote the first part and the other the second, although I’m guessing that’s not how they write. The immediate demon threat is resolved in this book, but the overall arching threat continues into the next books.

The authors did a good job of creating unique personalities for each character. There’s Eli the typical gruff Alpha, who never wanted a mate and even if Arden is his mate, Eli has to worry about his lost pack first. Arden is a half-elf and is kind, thoughtful, loves to care for people. His ‘magic’ is his kindness to others and connection to nature and blending into it. Arden used to be part of an M/M/M with his two best friends, Whimsy, a mage, and Julian, a vampire. Both Whimsy and Julian are great characters and I can’t wait to read about them in their own books.

There were some instances of what felt like head-hopping or incorrect povs.

Overall, I liked Out of the Ashes. It wasn’t so gruesome that I couldn’t read it. I would have preferred more of the paranormal mystery aspect instead of the romance, but that’s personal taste. As it was, the authors struck a nice balance between the two. The characters are distinct and the story ends with a HEA for Eli and Arden. I give this book, 4 Stars.

I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest and unbiased review.
