A friend asked me to read this to see what I thought, and I see potential, but I also see confusion. It was a ways into the book before I figured out it was fantasy, and even then, I wasn't sure for a while. After all, one of the characters was raised in a convent and was named after Mary, the mother of Jesus. Yet there was magic that showed up pretty quickly. I also had a hard time with the setting. At first I thought it was in England, but once I decided it was a fantasy novel, I guessed that the setting was someplace imaginary. I had the feeling several times that I was dropped into the middle of a story without a lot of explanation. The writing is good; the prose flows well. I would say there should be more detail, a lot more detail. The bones of a decent story are there.… (més)
