Needs a good editing. Lot's of commas in places they shouldn't be.

Review: Shatter by Elizabeth C. Mock.

This fantasy book was slow and confusing until I got almost half way through. Then I started getting use to the jargon, characters and the magic colors but I had to really stay full aware of the events in order to adjust to the story. Each character had some type of magic and were created in the story for some kind of purpose.

The story begins with Faela Durante on the run from her husband the father to her infant son, Sammy. Faela hides her eighteen month old son away for months with a friend named Ianos in order to travel and fulfill some prophecy while being agonized by guilt for what she had done in the past which won’t be revealed until somewhere near the middle of the book. (no spoilers) As Faela runs from her past to get to a shrine she entails many different characters, all having some type of magic and they become connected to her cause in some way or another.

I’m not much of a fantasy reader and that could have been why I had trouble where the magic colors come in. All the magic users had different magic colors, were trained at different houses, came from different time zones and were led by different Scions. The colors were; Red is for healing, Orange is Justice, Yellow is Art, Green is Growing, Blue is Prophecy, Purple is for Popping.

The plot kept me confused throughout the book until near the end and I don’t know if I even understood the true plot. It really didn’t have a beginning either. The starting of the story came in bits and pieces throughout the book. I did enjoy the creative characters, their magic, and adventures but sometimes their dialogued was underdeveloped. I realize the book was for the young adult audience but still it could have been organized in a better way. I also didn’t like how the author ended very quickly, within a few pages, the character’s lives and the end of the story. It felt rushed, unfinished, and left me unsatisfied …..

This story follows people who start out on their own and as things progress they come together. I laughed cried and grieved in this story with these amazingly well written and developed characters. I was sooo sad at the loss of two of them very worried and stressed for one who is now alone and am anxiously awaiting the next in this trilogy! The story has you flowing through their world with ease and comfort. I was truly impressed by not only the plot but the huge hanger at the end. Like a few characters I will be biting my nails waiting. It's totally worth reading if you love great stories with even better written characters that you love instantly especially Jair and Vaughn. But be warned although there isn't a huge battle or action scenes there is plenty that keeps your heart racing and fingers turning the page!!!… (més)
