Patterned after books of hours, it is a month-by-month account of life on a farm at the edge of the Atlantic Rainforest. Birds, flowers, butterflies, and bugs abound in a gentle story of three children living on their grandmother’s farm. The subtext of the grandmother’s determination to reforest the big field of the title gives hope and a way forward to young children as they learn about nature in the modern world. No other book exists to introduce young children to the seasons and nature in this part of the southern hemisphere, and precious few are available to teachers to use as tools in the classroom. For each month, there is a section on related study subjects, the names of and more detail about the plants and animals shown in the illustration, suggested web sites for more information, proposed discussion topics, and suggested activities.
